Brief Profile: Dr. Thejaswini Venkatesh received her Master's degrees in Biochemistry from Mysore University during 2004-2006. During this period, she received JNCASR summer research fellowship and successfully completed her summer research project at NII (National Institute of Immunology), Delhi. She qualified UGC-NET in 2008 and effectively completed her PhD from IISc (Indian Institute of Science), Bangalore in 2013. Her PhD thesis work unraveled the tumor suppressor functions and miRNA regulation of a neurodevelopmental gene, Microcephalin 1 in oral squamous cell carcinoma. She has worked as a Post-Doctoral Researcher at inStem (Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine), Bangalore where she studied the miRNA regulation in stem cells. She then worked as Assistant Professor at Nitte University, Mangalore where she carried her research on the role of miRNAs as breast cancer biomarkers from 2015-2016. Additionally, she is a recipient of DST-SERB start up research grant and Nitte University seed grant in 2015. She is currently pursuing her DST-SERB project which focusses on identification and functional analysis of tRNA derived small non coding RNAs in breast carcinogenesis. She also received the prestigious Sakura fellowship from JST (Japanese Science and Technology) and Young Scientist award from VIFRA in 2015. She has attended several National and International conferences and has authored more than 14 research articles in various international reputed journals such as Plos One, Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology, European Journal of Cell Biology, Oncoscience etc. Additionally, she has actively guided post graduate research projects and reviewed research articles for International reputed journals. Her lab at Central University of Kerala focusses on understanding the cellular mechanisms of different classes of small non coding RNAs and cytoplasmic granules in carcinogenesis and their possible role as cancer biomarkers or cancer therapeutic targets.
